MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

(January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968)

Was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main objective was to make progress on civil rights in the U.S. and is viewed as a human rights icon. Early into his career, Martin became a civil rights activist and led the montgomery bus boycott after rosa parks refused to have give up her seat on a bus for a white man. In 1963 he led the march on washington where he made his "I have a dream" speech.

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience.

Martin Luther king was assassinated on april.4,1968. He was awarded the presidential medal of freedom and congressional gold medal, and was alson givin his own national holiday "Martin Luther King Day".

If it were'nt for this man and Malcom X, black people would not have the rights they do today and america's president would not be an african american.

Nelson Mandela

he was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. Mandela was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961.

Nelson Mandela sacrificed 27 years in prison, and encouraged mass protests.

Civil disobedience is the active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government, or of an occupying power, without resorting to physical violence. It is one of the primary tactics of nonviolent resistance. In its most non-violent form (known as ahimsa or satyagraha) it could be said that it is compassion in the form of respectful disagreement. Ghandi showed civil disobedience by going on alot of non-violent strikes such as hunger strikes, he was the leader of india and the indian independance movement. Ghandi was a practitionar of non-violence and truth, he was a great leader..

Craig keilberger was the founder of free the children. The purpose of "free the children" is to help kids with nothing whether its for educational purposes, building houses, food drives or adopting villages. since founded in 1995 Free The Children has built more than 500 schools throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America, providing daily education to more than 50,000 children. Through its Adopt a Village development model, it has established more than 23,000 alternative income projects to assist women and their families in achieving sustainable incomes.

In a live special airing on Monday night, Tommy Douglas received the coveted title of "Greatest Canadian" as CBC counted down the Top 10 candidates in their national contest. He was the founder of medicare.

If it werent for tommy douglas I would not have medicare. That means if I were to be injured my parents would have to pay a big bill for surgery or whatever was needed. But thanks to tommy douglas we pay something like 20$ a month and we get free health care

Nellie McClung was a Canadian woman who grew up and lived in Winnipeg Manitoba. She may be known well for her work with making women "people" so that they could vote, but she is mostly known for "The Person's Case".In April of 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that the word "person" in Section 24 of the British North America Act did not include female persons. Women were not eligible. Five Alberta women – Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby - appealed the decision in Canada's highest court of appeal, all the way in Britain. The decision was made on October 18, 1929, the Privy Council ruled that women were indeed people under law, and so could be summoned to and serve as members of the Senate of Canada. This was what we now call today as "The Person's Case".
